St. Bricin's Vocational School has served the educational needs
of the community for many years. It was officially opened on 7th
January 1937. At first it had only three teachers and forty six
students and prepared students to Group Certificate standard.
With the introduction of the free Post Primary Education and Transport
Scheme in 1967, the numbers increased substantially and the Intermediate
Certificate examination was introduced. In 1977 a new extension
was built and around the same time the Leaving Certificate was added.
Over the years it has grown so now it can provide the full range
of Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate subjects preparing
students for apprenticeships in trades, entry to Regional Technical
Colleges, Teacher Training Colleges and Universities.
As well as the day courses at post primary level, the school has
always provided Adult Education evening classes according to the
requirements of the community.
SPORT
As well as a range of games held in the school grounds the students
participate in GAA Competitions organised at county level where
they have been doing very well in recent years. This success is
largely due to the amount of extra work put in by Mr. Brady - himself
a keen GAA follower.
Since the early 1980's the school has been involved in water sports.
At first the interest was in boat building as part of student project
work when wooden sailing boats and fibre glass canoes were made.
The next stage was getting on to the water and trying out sailing
and canoeing. This proved so popular with students that we joined
the Irish Sailing Association, and now run sailing courses for our
students with the help of fully qualified sailing instructors. We
now use Topper sailing dinghies and sail at Eonish, a lake on the
Erne near Killeshandra. Our old home made canoes have almost all
been replaced with modern plastic ones and we hold canoeing courses
on the river Erne in Belturbet with the help of qualified instructors
from the Canoeing Association of Northern Ireland.
