The West Cavan Outreach IT Training Project was originally established with funding from the EU Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation and is now supported by the Department of Education & Science. It provides the opportunity for rural communities to avail of quality computer training in local venues. Courses are held in Community Centers around West Cavan (Belturbet, Ballyconnell, Templeport, Corlough, Swanlinbar, Blacklion and Dowra). Courses are available to all adults not currently in full time education and are held mornings (10:30am) and evenings (19:30pm) for two hours. The Introduction to I.T. course introduces the student to new I.T. concepts such as hardware, software, computer components, health and safety while using a P.C., buying a P.C., Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word (word-processing), and Microsoft Paint. The Intermediate I.T. course leading to a FETAC Record of Achievement in Computer Literacy covers all of the above plus Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets) and Microsoft Powerpoint (presentation). The Introduction to Internet and eMail course informs the student how to connect to the internet, browse and search the internet, use a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, create an eMail address (eircom.net), send and receive email, configure and use Microsoft Outlook Express, guard against viruses. The ECDL courses are available to those who have completed the Intermediate I.T. course and the Introduction to Internet and eMail course. Maximum number per group is 12.
